Net Metering in Maharashtra: How It Works & How to Apply

Net metering is a billing mechanism that allows solar rooftop owners to export surplus electricity to the grid and receive credits on their electricity bill. In Maharashtra, the net metering policy is governed by MERC (Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission) regulations, and it's one of the most consumer-friendly policies in the country.

Here's how it works: During daytime, your solar panels generate electricity. Whatever you consume is used directly, and any surplus is exported to the grid through a bi-directional meter. At night or during cloudy periods, you draw power from the grid as usual. At the end of the billing cycle, you only pay for the 'net' consumption — the difference between what you drew from the grid and what you exported.

Eligibility: Any consumer with a rooftop solar system up to 1 MW can apply for net metering in Maharashtra. The system capacity cannot exceed 100% of your sanctioned load. You need approval from your DISCOM (MSEDCL for most of Maharashtra) and must install a bi-directional meter.

The application process: (1) Submit a net metering application to your local MSEDCL office along with your solar system design and specifications, (2) MSEDCL conducts a technical feasibility study (typically 15-30 days), (3) Upon approval, install your solar system through an empanelled installer, (4) MSEDCL inspects the installation and installs a bi-directional meter, (5) Your net metering account is activated.
